The VW Rabbit pickup was released in 1978 and produced at the VW assembly plant in PA from 1978 to 1984. The truck came with two engine choices – a 1.5L diesel and 1.7L petrol. The pickup was identical to any other Rabbit based variant. Te doors were the same as the 5-door hatches along with the interior. The wheelbase was 10 inches longer and to increase the payload to equal that of any other 4-cylincar pickup,, the coil springs were replaced with leaf springs. In 1981 over 37,000 VW Rabbit pickups were sold. The following year, sales dropped to slightly more than 2,000.
