Seller offering a 1971 Volkswagen Bus with 106,000 miles for $12,900. Two tone cherry red and white with chrome hubcaps – this van looks great. Quite a bit of mechanical work has been done including rebuilt engine, new brakes, wheel bearings, starter, shocks, and battery. Seller says this one is mostly rust free since it spent most of its life in Utah.
Rust is a big problem with 2nd generation VW buses. Rust under the sliding door, inside the wheel wells and the rocker panels is common. 1971 is the first year without the split front window and is commonly referred to as Bay-window or breadloaf model. Slight bigger and heavier, it is also equipped with a slightly larger 1.6L engine with dual intake ports on each cylinder and disc brakes – a big improvement.
A number of VW bus configurations were available. Customization was common. Front dash and seats appear to be in great condition. Driver’s side door panel appears to be missing but passenger-side panel is intact.
2nd row bench seat appears to be included but probably needs some attention. Rear floor and paneling looks to be intact and no major rust problems. Pack up the family – we’re getting some ice cream.
